Several today's best designers are taking a broader look at, creating practical items for those who have more basic needs. Luke Burbank has been sampling their wares. (Originally broadcast on May 31, 2015.)
What comes to mind when you hear the term "design"? A modern new mobile phone you can use like a view? Maybe a extravagant sports car,Air Max,articleArtist José Parlá reaches new heights - CBS News1?
Most of us find design as a thing that makes our lives much easier, safer, better. But perform they feel that method in the developing globe?

, style is more than just a job,Air Max Baratas, it's a lifestyle. He designed the offices of his SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA company, Fuseproject, and they stand as sort of museum to all he's made.

Yet, one of his proudest achievements isn't something he made for Prada or Samsung.
It's a set of five-dollar eyeglasses.
"There's an excellent proverb I discovered from Finland that says,llig Air Max, 'The poor can't afford bad style, cheap design, low-quality style,'" he said. "Why? 'Cause you must buy it once again, 'trigger it breaks down."
The eyeglasses, an incredible number of pairs, are becoming put on by Mexican schoolchildren. They're designed with a special materials called Grilamid, which withstands high levels of distortion. "Which is certainly important when you're a kid. You probably frequently sit on those glasses. So they need to survive child years,articleNo1, I assume," Behar said.
The Mexican authorities hired Behar to solve a problem: poor kids who needed glasses were choosing to look without them, instead of wear the decidedly un-stylish pairs the federal government had been handing out. Behar's style transformed that.

"Every child you offer with a pair of eyeglasses is in fact gonna turn into a better learner," Behar stated.
Cheap, durable glasses are one thing -- but how about a cheap,Ray Ban Sunglasses, durable pc for kids in the developing world? He designed one of those, too.

Dean Still hasn't noticed some of his designs show up on any cash yet, but he's hoping that what he's creating within an old Oregon logging city could have the same kind of influence. His goal: for hardwood to burn as cleanly as natural gas.
