ANGELS CAMP, Calif. -- A huge selection of people rushed to escape an enormous wildfire charging over the tinder-dry Sierra Nevada foothills, and another fast-moving blaze broke out in Northern California Saturday that caused burn off accidents to four firefighters.

To the east, a blood-red sun pressed through a choking fog of smoke cigarettes and ash that switched the grassy, tree-studded Sierra Nevada foothills about 70 kilometers southeast of Sacramento an eerie white.
