More than 200 weapons, among them heavy machine guns, were issued during the 1970s to the Ministry of National Development and are still unaccounted for.The investigation would seek to ascertain how many of these weapons have been returned to the army.The investigation, which the President hinted may be conducted by an independent body, will focus on not only accounting for all guns ever issued by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), but will also look at the police and other paramilitary agencies and pave the way to improve better record-keeping within those agencies.The announcement by Jagdeo comes amidst swirling allegations and counter-allegations being hurled by the Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Robert Corbin, and the People’s Progressive Party Civic Government.In the wake of the revelation that the guns had been loaned to a PNC Ministry, the main opposition party retaliated by charging that the government and the army were using the issue of the guns as a smoke screen to detract from torture allegations being levied against the army.During a shootout on between police and armed men at Mahaicony on January 9 last, police recovered three guns, including a Beretta submachine gun and an M72 rifle.The army later issued a release which said that, from record checks, two guns belonged to the army but were issued between 1976 and 1979 to the Ministry of National Development.Kaieteur News later reported that army sources had confirmed that hundreds of guns were issued by the GDF during that period.President Jagdeo had said that initial checks found that up to 1979, a total of 237 guns, including four general purpose machine guns (GPMG), were issued to the Ministry.According to Jagdeo, it is rarely that guns are issued to Government bodies, except for a few cases where small arms were allowed for personal protection.作者: ZzqeuGH1 時間: 2018-8-25 23:22 標題: NFL Jerseys Supply
