The use of cellular phones in the prisons is becoming very worrying for security officials, as it seems prisoners are going to the extreme to smuggle phones and other devices into the prisons to facilitate their escape bids.In wake of the recent prison break at the Camp Street prison, Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee called on security officials to be more vigilant.Rohee said it is unbelievable the extreme to which prisoners are going to plan their own escape.“In the past we have found that prisoners are smuggling cell phones into the prison in their butts, in their food and in the soles of their shoes,” Rohee lamented.The Minister further stressed that, while the prison officials are doing their best, prisoners continue to find innovative ways of smuggling not only phones but also weapons into the prison to facilitate the escape bids.“We have to bear in mind that prisoners will always plan to escape; now these plans can be executed from within the prison walls and even from outside. This will always be a challenge,” Rohee noted.The Minister said that they are dealing with allegations that items are being smuggled to prisoners while they are being transported to and from the courts.“These things we must expect and they are very normal, but I am not saying that you have to accept them. We should not be surprised, but we must constantly carry out searches and do what we have to to eliminate these things.”He said while the prison authorities are aware of these issues there still remains the issue of collusion between prison inmates and prison officers.“We can put all kind of measures in place, but at the end of the day we still have the human factor which is always the weakest link,” Rohee said. He however noted that the prisons have ways of dealing with prison officers who are caught assisting prisoners in illegal activities.Rohee added that the prison authorities should not become complacent; they should keep up with their routine searches on prisoners.“We need good intelligence; we have to maintain 24 hours’ effective security at prisons in order to thwart any prison-break attempt. Attempts are thwarted.”As it relates to Sunday’s Camp Street prisons break, Minister Rohee said the security forces should be commended for their prompt response.According to Rohee, last Sunday’s incident once again clearly shows the extreme to which prisoners would go to get their freedom.“One of the six prisoners, when he was recaptured, was found with cuts about his body which he sustained after crawling through barbed wires; he just wanted to get out even if it meant harming himself,” Rohee said.He noted that while people are placing emphasis on the number of prisoners who attempted to escape, praise should be given to the security forces for recapturing the five in the prison compound.“Five of the six were recaptured within minutes of the alarm being raised; only one managed to get out of the compound and was recaptured within hours,NBA Jerseys From China,” the Home Affair Minister noted.He said that given the situation the security forces should be applauded for their efforts.
