Garbage collection should resume in the wake of Government paying some $70M towards its rates and taxes for this year.City Mayor, Hamilton Green, yesterday said that Government had sent a cheque amounting to $70 million,Babe Ruth Jersey, which will adequately cover the close to $60M debt the municipality has with solid waste contractors. The contractors, Cevon’s Waste Management and Puran Brothers Disposal Service, on Monday last decided to withdraw their garbage disposal service in the city, due to the municipality’s inability to pay them for the past three months. The contractors had said that the city entity also owes arrears that accumulated during a period of last year.Acting Town Clerk, Yonette Pluck-Cort, at the most recent municipal statutory meeting, disclosed that the contractors had indicated their intent to halt their operating via letters. She revealed that the management of Puran Brothers in a correspondent, had stated that they were experiencing serious financial difficulties and therefore would withdraw their service as of last Monday.A similar letter from Cevon’s was brought to the attention of Solid Waste Director, Hubert Urlin, Pluck-Cort had noted.Acting City Treasurer, Andrew Meredith, at the meeting had reported that he could have paid the contractors about $10, but that the contractors had dubbed that amount insufficient. However, the contractors in separate invited comments had revealed that they were offered a mere $2.5 M which represents two weeks of operation, an amount which could not compensate for the works already completed. As such they reiterated their intent to withhold their service until they are paid in full.In order to address the problem, the municipal Finance Committee had met to determine how the much needed funds would be mobilised, before the garbage situation reached crisis proportion. As part of the mobilising efforts, Williams said that a request was made to Central Government for the payment of its 2009 property taxes. Also as part of the efforts, he divulged that City Mayor, Hamilton Green, had engaged a mission to persuade corporate entities to pay up their taxes even as residential taxpayers were being urged to do the same. Some $5M was accumulated by last Wednesday, allowing for the contractors to be paid a total of $2.5M each, an amount that was not enough to see them resume operation.Public Relations Officer, Royston King, had said that although the contractors had stopped regular collections, the market environs are kept clean through private contracts with vendors. Municipal staffers had however maintained the collection of pathological waste from the public hospital and waste from the city abattoir. |
