ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – In the wake of the fire on Friday which left five persons homeless and three business entities burnt, President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Poonai Bhigroog,Soccer Jerseys China, is calling on persons within the Central Corentyne area to offer financial support for the completion of the Rose Hall Fire Station.Funds given would be used for land filling and painting of the fence in the compound which houses the recently constructed Fire Station. This is sponsored by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Guyana Fire Service.This three months project provides lectures and demonstrations of basic techniques in fire fighting and some aspects of first aid.He indicated that with time being an important factor in fire fighting, having persons trained in each community would cut back on response time and buildings and lives could be saved in the event of an actual fire.Just after 08:00 hours on Friday, fire of unknown origin was discovered in the upper flat of a two-storey building on the Rose Hall Town Public Road. The upper floor was home to Gregory Beharry, his wife and three children and below housed Jai’s Footwear, Pawn Shop and Jewellery, Mathadeen Western Union and Bill Express and A&N Cosmetics and Gift Center.Allegations of theft of cash were made with fingers pointing to some members of the Guyana Fire Service. In the wake of that, a female fire fighter was physically assaulted. On that day, three persons including the manager of Jai’s Footwear, Pawn Shop and Jewellery were detained. He was subsequently released on self bail and is to report to the Rose Hall Town Police Outpost this morning. One other person remains in police custody while the third had escaped from police detention just minutes after he was arrested.Bhigroog described the fire as a tragedy which could have been averted or the damages reduced, “If the fire station in Rose Hall Town was up and running.”He noted that he cannot over emphasise the need for such a facility, given that there are two fire stations in East Berbice/Corentyne; one is situated at New Amsterdam which is some 14 miles (22 kilometers) from Rose Hall Town. The other is at Corriverton which is 45 miles (73 kilometers) from New Amsterdam.The Guyana Sugar Corporation plays a pivotal role in fire fighting in the Berbice area.According to him, the Land Rover from the Guyana Sugar Corporation East Berbice Estate Albion Fire Department was on the scene but could not attack the blaze for unknown reasons and had to wait for the arrival of the tender from the New Amsterdam Fire Station. Eventually water was secured from a trench.He condemned the attitude of some free riders who were bent on securing ill gotten gains. “It’s a shame that while others are trying to salvage their belongings, others are looting.”According to him, with the loss of three business entities, close to 10 families are now on the bread line.“With the few cases of fire we had in Rose Hall Town, we lost three historic buildings. I was not even born when those places were constructed, and they were all over 50 years old.”The driving force behind the construction of the $12 million fire station is the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce. Government is expected to provide a fire tender.The Chamber invested $2.5 million on this project from the 2005 and 2008 Berbice Expo and Trade Fair activities.The benevolence of well-wishers, including overseas-based Guyanese businessman, Dave Balgobin, who handed over $1 million in 2008, also added up.Poonai thanked all those who have assisted in any way towards making it possible to have the very first fire station in that area.Consolidation work began in March last year on the 159 by 59 foot plot of land situated to the rear of the Rose Hall Police Outpost. The design for the fire station had to be modified as a result of rising costs and the Chamber’s determination to stick within the budgeted amount for the project.
