BENGAL FARM, CORENTYNE – As the inclement weather continues to have its way, President of the Guyana Rice Producers’ Association Leeka Rambrich is predicting lower yields for this rice crop. The second crop (autumn crop) is now in the flowering stage where more sunlight is needed and if this is not had, then the grains would be unfilled. The first crop (spring crop) saw yields of 32 bags per acre in Region Six. So far it is estimated that this crop may be reduced to 28 bags per acre. According to Mr. Rambrich, this is nothing strange since there is usually a reduction in yield during the second crop. However, should the rainy weather continue during the next two weeks then there may be cause for panic since harvesting is expected to commence by mid-September.He said the dams leading to rice fields across Guyana are in bad shape and this is preventing access. Mr. Rambrich said the Region Six Administration has been maintaining the drainage and irrigation structures but, nevertheless, there were small packages of water accumulating in the swampy areas. The President of the Rice Producers’ Association is appealing to rice farmers to begin voluntary work such as finding ways to track the excess water off the dams. He said though the rain is expected until the end of August, even one week of continuous sunshine can make a big difference in terms of access.Preparation for this autumn crop began in mid-May and should have ended June 30th but there still are some farmers within the Manchester/Liverpool and Bengal areas, still sowing despite the advice from the Guyana Rice Producers’ Association and Guyana Rice Development Board. The target set for this crop is 48,000 and 47,005 acres have been sown across Region Six. Of this, the four schemes comprising Black Bush Polder planted 18,000 acres and the remainder from the front lands (areas from Crabwood Creek to New Forest along with East and West Canje, the East Bank of Berbice and New Amsterdam). For the first crop (spring crop) 2010, 48,600 acres were sown with preparation starting back in December 2009.Besides the inclement weather, the paddy is another concern for farmers. The Guyana Rice Producers’ Association and Guyana Rice Development Board have been constantly reminding farmers of methods of prevention and steps to take to avoid much loss. For the first crop of 2010, statistics show that in some areas more than 20 percent of the crop was lost to the paddy bug infestation while in other locations the figures stood below five percent. There are also the farmers’ schools throughout Region Six which provide opportunities for farmers to share knowledge of practices and expertise. According to Mr. Rambrich, if farmers had followed the advice given to commence spraying early this crop then losses should be minimal. Since the paddy bug pest is present in every crop they were also encouraged to use sweep nets. These gadgets are used to determine the amount of paddy bugs present and give an indication if there is need for spraying. Spraying becomes necessary whenever there are two or more bugs present per seed. Each farmer should do at least 50 sweeps per rice field each crop.A paddy bug can suck ten grains per day,China Jerseys Authentic, it does not have to suck the entire grain, but, only pierce it and damage is done. It is not easy to predict how much damage one bug can do so farmers must use preventative methods at all times.Despite the problems facing the industry, the President of the Guyana Rice Producers’ Association claimed that new faces are now making their mark in rice cultivation and old ones have returned to the land. Region six has some 8,000 registered farmers in rice cultivation at present. According to him, the rice industry provides employment for more than 50,000 persons both directly and indirectly including planters, millers, truckers and exporters. |
