Property owners within Agricola,Jerseys NFL China, North Ruimveldt, Kingston, Tucville, Lacytown and Wortmanville are significantly indebted to the Georgetown municipality as it relates to the payment of rates and taxes.And according to Public Relations Officer, Royston King, the city entity is in dire need of the outstanding funds.In a release issued on Wednesday he said that the action of defaulters to neglect their civic responsibility to the city is seriously affecting the ability of the council to meet its financial obligations.King explained that because the council has a narrow revenue base, the situation has become extremely worrying as the entity has expended substantial sums in drainage, solid waste, law enforcement and other city works.He said that the municipality has intensified its collection drive to collect outstanding sums owed.And the drive will incorporate the serving of demand notices to property owners, an exercise, which according to King, has started in Riverview, Roxanne Burnham Gardens and Agricola.The municipality, he said, has also moved to encourage defaulters who are experiencing difficulties to visit the municipality to enter a special payment plan, as failure to pay could result in the publishing of their names in the media. Legal proceedings he noted is also an option that the municipality will not hesitate to engage.“Over the years the Mayor and City Council has been encouraging property-owners to honour their civic obligation to the city, by paying their taxes.Property taxes account for about 80 per cent of the total revenue of our Treasury.”“When home owners neglect to pay their rates, they affect the ability of the council to provide services and facilities to the council. Therefore, the council is urging rate payers to come in and settle their accounts.”Meanwhile, the council is urging persons who are in the process of purchasing properties to ensure that the rates on such buildings have been paid up in full.According to King there have been a number of citizens who have bought properties on auction and are saddled with the burden of outstanding property rates.
